About Munnar
Munnar is a town located in the Idduki district of India's Kerala state, situated in the south Western Ghats of South India the name Munnar usually refers to the whole tourist area of the Idukki District of which the town forms only a small part.The name Munnar is believed to be derived from the Tamil and Malayalam words Munu (three) and aaru (river), referring to the town's strategic location at the confluence of the Muthirappuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers. The Munnar panchayat in the Devikulam block is the largest panchayat in the Idduki district having an area measuring nearly 557 kmĀ². Essentially a passĀ  ; the area around Munnar is surrounded by vast jungles and remains wet and cold during most of the year. The entire area of Munnar officially belongs to the government of Kerala ; though the Poonjar royal family (its pre-independence owners) have made claims to the contrary . Sprawling tea plantations, picture book towns, winding lanes, trekking and holiday facilities make Munnar a beautiful hillstation. This hill station is marked by vast expanses of tea plantations, colonial bungalows, rivulets, waterfalls and cool weather. It is also an ideal destination for trekking and mountain biking

Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam National Park is located about 15 km from Munnar. This park is famous for its endangered inhabitant - the Nilgiri Tahr and also home to several species of rare butterflies, animals and birds. Spread over an area of 97 sq. km. this is a great place for trekking, the park offers a magnificent view of the tea plantations and also the rolling hills caressed by blankets of mists. The park becomes a hot destination when the hill slopes here get covered in a carpet of blue, resulting from the flowering of Neelakurinji. It is a plant endemic to this part of the Western Ghats which blooms once in twelve years. The next blooming will be in 2018.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Around 40 kms from Munnar town situated near the Tamilnadu border, the 90 sq. km. wildlife sanctuary established in 1984. It is home to a variety for fauna and flora. A watch tower situated near the road gives to breath taking views to forests.
